President Cyril Ramaphosa hails Microsoft's investment launch of R5.4bn

SANDTON - President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed Microsoft South Africa's Investment Launch of R5.4bn to expand its Cloud and AI infrastructure in South Africa to meet the growing demand for Azure services in the SADC region.

This investment builds on the company’s R 20.4bn investment over the past three years to establish the nation’s first enterprise-grade datacentres in Johannesburg and Cape Town.


President Ramaphosa commended Microsoft’s plans to train one million South Africans in AI skills, machine learning and cybersecurity by 2026 and outlined that South Africa is developing a National AI Policy that seeks to position South Africa as a leader in AI innovation, while at the same time addressing its ethical, economic and societal implications.

Microsoft’s commitment to supporting South Africa’s transition to a high-tech economy comes at a pivotal time, when South Africa is hosting the G20. 
 
Using AI for sustainable development is among the priorities of #G20SouthAfrica’s Presidency.

DURBAN -  The eThekwini Municipality's Recreation and Parks Directorate, working together with the City's Emergency Services, are attending to multiple incidents across the city following strong winds that swept through eThekwini this afternoon and early evening, uprooting trees and disrupting traffic in several communities. No injuries have been reported at this stage. Since last night, 23 fallen trees had been reported across the city. JOHANNESBURG - Podcaster and activist Penuel "The Black Pen" Mlotshwa has made his vote known for the upcoming Local Government Elections. Mlotshwa, who's no stranger to sharing his political views online, went public about his preferred party for the elections taking place in November. "I'm voting for ActionSA in my ward and for my PR vote in Johannesburg. "I'd like ActionSA to get more of the 270 seats available to run the JHB city council," he said. BOKSBURG - The Gauteng National Taxi Association is threatening a provincial industry strike should its concerns remain ignored. The Association says if a meeting with Roads and Transport MEC, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela isn't fruitful and its memorandum of demands aren't met, consequently this force them to disrupt services for seven days. On Thursday, 16 July 2026, MEC held a strategic engagement with the Vosloorus and Boksburg District Taxi Association (VBDTA) in Ekurhuleni, as part of the provincial government's ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with the minibus taxi industry.
