JOHANNESBURG - The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach. SAFA held a successful NEC Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday, 8 August 2026 and the Members backed Mosimane to return to the South African senior men’s national and replace Hugo Broos, who stepped down a few days ago. “The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan following the NEC Extraordinary Meeting.

POLOKWANE - Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Michael Nkambule has passed away at just 37. The  former Bafana Bafana player  succumbed to his injuries after a car accident while returning from an event in Polokwane. Nkambule also plied his trade at Strasbourg, Supersport United and Black Leopards. Before his passing, Nkambule had started a journey of sharing the behind the scenes of football and tipping aspiring players about potential obstacles in soccer related podcasts.

DURBAN - Different police units are combing for clues and pieces of evidence at a crime scene in Klaarwater, near Mariannhill, where a ward councillor was shot and killed this afternoon, Thursday, 06 August 2026. Information available at this stage suggests that the deceased was in his office with several community members when an unknown man arrived and posed as someone who needed assistance from the deceased. The deceased reportedly went outside to assist the man when the suspect drew a firearm and shot him several times. He was declared dead at the scene. The suspect fled the scene on foot. The motive for the killing remains unknown at this stage, and a manhunt for the suspect is underway.

GAUTENG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of attorney Thubelihle Sbonakaliso Mpisi (30) by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg. Mpisi was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his intimate partner, Mahlako Malebo Rabalao.  In addition to the murder conviction, Mpisi was found guilty of malicious injury to property and defeating the administration of justice. He received five years’ imprisonment on each of these counts. The court ordered that the sentences on Counts 2 and 3 run concurrently with the life sentence, resulting in an effective sentence of life imprisonment. The convictions stem from an incident on 07 March 2023 in President Park, Midrand, where the deceased’s burnt body was discovered inside her motor vehicle after it had been deliberately set alight. BRAKPAN - The Gauteng MEC for Education, Mr Lebogang Maile, has expressed profound shock and sadness following the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old educator from Michael Zulu Primary School in Tsakane, who was gunned down at approximately 07:00 this morning while on his way to school. According to preliminary information, the educator was walking alongside a group of learners when he was attacked at the corner of Dunge and Masinga Streets, less than one kilometre from the school. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened an investigation. DURBAN - EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, and the Speaker of Council, Councillor Thabani Nyawose visited the family of Celani Zungu, who allegedly lost his life after being run over by a municipal water tanker in Adams Mission, south of Durban on Sunday. On behalf of the municipality, Mayor Xaba conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.  He assured them that a team of municipal officials, together with the Ward Councillor, Lihle Makhanya, will work closely with the family to assist with the funeral arrangements and ensure that the deceased receives a dignified burial. The deceased was run over by the municipal water tanker after what appeared to be a demonstration against the delivery of the water. The video of the tragic incident has gone viral.  Action against the truck driver is unknown at this stage.

BRAKPAN - A teacher was shot and killed near Michael Zulu Primary School in Tsakane, Brakpan on Monday morning. The victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared deceased at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not yet been confirmed, and police investigations are expected to determine the motive.

CAPE TOWN The South African National Parks (SANParks) Table Mountain National Park Fire Management Team continues to respond to the ongoing wildfire above Kloof Nek Corner and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway following overnight firefighting operations. Ground crews remained on the fireline throughout the night, monitoring and suppressing isolated hotspots. While conditions were favourable overnight due to lighter winds, potential flare-ups are anticipated for today as temperatures increase, particularly in steep cliff and rocky areas that remain difficult for ground crews to access. To strengthen suppression efforts, Kishugu Aviation and AG Sprayers, contracted to SANParks, has deployed two Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) aircraft from AG Aviation from 08:00 this morning. TROMPSBURG - The Free State Department of Health confirms that a 47-year-old Zimbabwean female patient who was admitted at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital as a yPriority 1 (critical) patient following the N1 bus accident between Trompsburg and Edenburg, has sadly passed away on Friday, 31 July 2026.  The patient had been receiving intensive care and was on ventilatory support. This brings the total number of fatalities from the accident to 11 Both Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital and Universitas Academic Hospital continue to provide care to the remaining critically and seriously injured patients from this tragic incident.
