KUGOMPO CITY - The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), together with officials from the IEC, conducted a voter registration activation at the Ndende taxi rank in KuGompo CBD in Eastern Cape. According to Akhona Dlamini, Communication Assistant GCIS-EC Provincial Office, the activation aimed to encourage community members to exercise their right to vote by registering during the second voter registration weekend, taking place on 1 and 2 August 2026.  GCIS and the IEC engaged directly with commuters and taxi operators, distributing information and assisting with voter registration queries. "The activation was well received and successfully raised awareness about the importance of voter registration. GAUTENG - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, through the Provincial Counterfeit Unit, continues to intensify efforts to combat the manufacturing, distribution and sale of counterfeit, contraband and illicit goods across the province. UMLAZI - The Durban Metropolitan Police Service (DMPS) has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of a woman found guilty of the kidnapping, extortion and murder of a five-year-old child. In August 2025, the child was kidnapped from uMlazi Q Section, with a ransom of R60 000 demanded from the family. Acting on intelligence received from Crime Intelligence, the DMPS Tracing Unit, working alongside Crime Intelligence, launched an intelligence-led operation in the Umzimkhulu policing area. The suspect was successfully located, arrested and handed over to SAPS in connection with uMlazi SAPS Case 402/08/2025. During the investigation, the suspect led investigators to the tragic circumstances surrounding the child's death, which formed part of the evidence presented before the court. TROMPSBURG -  A bus accident on N1 north of Trompsburg in the Free State has claimed the lives of 10 people. The Free State Emergency Medical Services confirmed that a bus carrying approximately 60 passengers overturned shortly after 21:30 last night on the N1, about 24 km north of Trompsburg in the direction of Edenburg. The accident has left multiple people injured. The department has urged motorists traveling on the N1 between Trompsburg and Edenburg to be on high alert, reduce speed, and expect significant delays. 

RANDBURG - Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse  (OUTA) has noted Cabinet’s long-overdue approval of ten-year driving licence cards for light motor vehicles.  The decision follows years of calls for reform from OUTA and other civil society organisations.  “This decision is almost six years overdue, but it is a victory for motorists and for common sense. Government has finally accepted that forcing motorists through an inefficient renewal system every five years wastes time and money without making our roads safer,” says OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage. The ten-year validity period will apply to driving licence codes A, A1, B and EB. Heavy commercial and public transport vehicle licences will remain subject to the existing two- or five-year renewal periods, while professional driving permits will continue to be renewed every two years. PARYS - A man believed to be part of a cartel that is behind the multi million rand fraud involving the licensing of motor vehicles has been arrestied. The man was busted in Parys, Free State in a joint intelligence led operation conducted by a team comprising members of Road Traffic Management Corporation’s National Anti-Corruption Unit, the South African Police Service’s Crime Intelligence Tactical and Special Operations, the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), as well as the cyber units from Crime Intelligence and the Hawks. CAPE TOWN - Parliament has approved the extension of driving license card validity in South Africa, which will increase the time between renewals from 5 to 10 years. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni confirmed the approval in a post-Cabinet briefing on 30 July. Cabinet approved the extension of the validity period for license codes A, A1, B and EB, Ntshavheni said. However, this will only apply to light motor vehicles. Heavy, commercial and transport vehicles will adhere to the current renewal cycles of between two and five years, and professional licenses will remain on the two-year cycle.

KRUGERSDORP - DA Shadow MEC for Roads and Logistics Evert Du Plessis has blasted the Gauteng Provincial Government for failing to prioritise budget for the R563 in Krugersdorp, West Rand. According to Du Plessis, it's been more than a year after the sinkhole formed on the R563 and, it remains unrepaired because no budget has been allocated—putting motorists at risk every day. In a reply to DA questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Du Plessis says MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela confirmed that while geotechnical investigations have been completed and tender documents prepared, repairs cannot proceed until funding is made available. "This is unacceptable," he said. "The sinkhole has been known to the department for more than a year, yet no budget was prioritised to fix it. GAUTENG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is alarmed by the delay in online admission process for new learners. According to the party, the Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that the 2027 Grade 1 and Grade 8 online admissions process will only open on 4 August 2026 and close on 5 September 2026. The DA warns that this delayed timeline could once again leave thousands of learners without placements before the start of the school year. Previous admissions cycles have been marred by system failures, delayed placements and learners being allocated to schools outside their parents' preferred choices. HARRISMITH  - The  Department of Transport and Department of Human Settlements says it is  ensuring that its teams responds with agility to snow-prone areas. Part of its response plan, the department said graders, working with Road Traffic Inspectorate Teams will remove the snow before it can accumulate to above 30 cm on the road networks.   RTI teams in snow-prone areas such as N3, around Ladysmith, Kokstad, Underberg, Harding, Newcastle, N11, Pietermaritzburg and N2 will co-ordinate possible road closures to prevent motorists from getting stuck on the road.  

EASTERN CAPE - The Joe Gqabi District Municipality advises all motorists to exercise extreme caution when travelling on roads affected by ongoing rainfall and snowfall, which have resulted in wet and slippery driving conditions. The following routes are currently affected: • *R56-8 (km 89.0) between Matatiele and Tlokoeng (Mount Fletcher):* Rain and snowfall have made the road surface increasingly slippery. ROODEPOORT - Police in Gauteng are investigating two counts of murder, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition following a shootout with suspected illegal miners in Roodepoort during the early hours of Tuesday, 28 July 2026. Members of SAPS Roodepoort, assisted by the West Rand K9 Unit and BAS Security, responded to reports of a shooting in an open field in Roodepoort. Upon arrival, the members approached the area to investigate. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the police, resulting in a shootout. During the exchange of shots, two suspected illegal miners were fatally wounded. No police officers or security personnel were injured during the incident. Police recovered three unlicensed firearms, an AK-47 rifle, a .22 calibre rifle, and a 9mm Uzi, as well as 126 rounds of ammunition of various calibres. KUGOMPO CITY - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirm that the death toll from the early morning head-on collision on the N2 near Mooiplaas, just outside KuGompo City, has risen to *six.* The female victim who was rushed to hospital in a critical condition has sadly succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. The Department extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of all six victims during this difficult time. NORTHERN CAPE - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mothibistad arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly dealing in dagga following an intelligence-driven operation that resulted in the seizure of dagga with an estimated street value of R237 500. The 30-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Magistrate's Court soon, facing a charge of dealing in dagga. KWAMASHU - Public assistance is required to locate a white Toyota Quantum with a blue wrap displaying registration CL 65 TZ GP that was stolen in KwaMashu - KZN. WESTERN CAPE - Detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are investigating a multiple murder and an attempted murder following a shooting incident in NY 50, Gugulethu, during the early hours of Monday, 27 July 2026, in which five people lost their lives and another was injured. Police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence where they found the victims with multiple gunshot wounds. Four men and one woman, aged between 19 and 23, were declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel. A 20-year-old woman who sustained gunshot wounds was transported to a medical facility for treatment. Preliminary investigation indicates that two unidentified armed men forced their way into the house by kicking open the front door. PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has in terms of section 12(8)(a) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act of 1998 accepted the request by Adv Andrea Johnson, the Investigating Director of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), to vacate office with immediate effect. The President’s agreement follows a recommendation by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi, and supported by National Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Andy Mothibi, that Adv Johnson’s request be granted. Adv Johnson directed her request for an immediate release from office to the National Director of Public Prosecutions and President Ramaphosa. President Ramaphosa thanked Adv Johnson for her years of service in the NPA and as the head of IDAC. ESHOWE - The Department of Health is outraged and deeply disturbed by the brazen attack on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel at Nkwalini Store on the R34. While responding to a call for help, a call made in the sacred name of saving lives,  staff were held at gunpoint, robbed of their personal belongings, and forced to drive to at least two taverns to purchase alcohol using their own bank cards. They were held captive for four hours before being released. Thankfully, they were not physically assaulted, but the psychological trauma inflicted is immeasurable. "This incident is not an isolated aberration, it is becoming a troubling pattern in a province already stretched thin by the immense demand for EMS services. DURBAN - As the world marks World Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July, the eThekwini Municipality together with lifesaving organisations hosted a water safety programme at the Rachel Finlayson Swimming Pool.  A key highlight was a series of rescue demonstration by lifeguards who showcased mass rescue techniques, emergency response procedures and life saving first aid interventions. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), drowning takes more than 300 000 lives a year - 30 every hour - and almost a quarter of them are children under five. Globally, it is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years. More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, domestic water storage vessels and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.

MAYFLOWER - A suspect, who was wanted in connection with several serious and violent cases including murder, attempted murder and business robbery, was fatally wounded during a shootout with the Police in the early hours of Saturday, 25 July 2026, in Mayflower. Police received information that the suspect they have been looking for was at a tavern in Glenmore, within the Mayflower Policing Precinct. As Police entered the yard of the tavern, the suspect opened fire on the Police, and a shootout ensued.  During the shootout, the suspect was fatally wounded. Next to the suspect, Police recovered a firearm, with serial numbers filed-off, believed to have been used by the suspect as he shot at the Police.  The suspect is linked to a number of serious and violent crimes in and around Mpumalanga and was on the police wanted list. CENTURION - Multiple shack fires broke out at the Centurion Taxi Rank Informal Settlement on Saturday evening, 25 July 2026. The Old East Safety Forum responded alongside other agencies and organisations, assisting with crowd control, supporting the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department on scene, and helping affected families in the aftermath of the fires. At the time of this report, no fatalities had been recorded. One patient was transported by Gauteng EMS to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by SAPS.

POLOKWANE - Polokwane Executive Mayor Cllr Makoro John Mpe was among the mourners gathered at Jack Botes Hall to bid a heartfelt farewell to the late Seputla Sebogodi on Saturday,  25 July. In a fitting tribute to a life well lived, Polokwane Municipality approved that Sebogodi be laid to rest at the Hero's Acre in Polokwane, ensuring that his name is forever etched among the city's distinguished sons and daughters whose contributions continue to inspire generations.  The solemn service drew an array of dignitaries and prominent figures, including MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Jerry Maeeko, MMC for Arts and Culture Cllr Tebele Mamabolo, MMC for Community Safety Cllr Joosuf Pemma, alongside celebrated personalities from the creative arts fraternity and members of the wider community, all united in celebrating the remarkable life and enduring legacy of a man whose light will continue to shine long after the curtain has fallen.
