PIETERMARITZBURG  - The first Entry Window for the 2027 Comrades Marathon, for Green and Yellow Number-holders, opened at 10am on Tuesday, 25 August, and closed just seven hours later, with all available entries in this window having been snapped up in record time. This was the first of three entry windows for the 100th edition of the race, taking place on Sunday, 13 June 2027. POLOKWANE - Orlando Pirates gained a slight upper hand in their MTN8 semifinal tie against Sekhukhune United, winning 1-0 in the first leg fixture played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. The win, along with the crucial away goal, gave them the advantage ahead of the deciding leg set to take place at Orlando Amstel Arena in a week’s time. KU GOMPO CITY - The Executive Mayor of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Councillor Princess Faku, has expressed her deepest condolences to the family, friends, boxing fraternity and the people of Buffalo City following the tragic passing of Mdantsane-born boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete. Tete, a former two-weight world champion, was reportedly shot and killed in Mdantsane on Friday evening. He was 38.  Police have opened a murder investigation. JOHANNESBURG - The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach. SAFA held a successful NEC Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday, 8 August 2026 and the Members backed Mosimane to return to the South African senior men’s national and replace Hugo Broos, who stepped down a few days ago. “The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan following the NEC Extraordinary Meeting.

POLOKWANE - Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Michael Nkambule has passed away at just 37. The  former Bafana Bafana player  succumbed to his injuries after a car accident while returning from an event in Polokwane. Nkambule also plied his trade at Strasbourg, Supersport United and Black Leopards. Before his passing, Nkambule had started a journey of sharing the behind the scenes of football and tipping aspiring players about potential obstacles in soccer related podcasts.

GAUTENG - The South African junior team departs on Saturday night at 8.55pm in a series of staggered flights for the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA to be held from 5–9 August 2026.   Between 24–30 July, individual athletes began travelling to the USA. JOHANNESBURG -  The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the departure of Bafana Bafana Hugo Broos. The 74-year-old Belgium tactian bows out of the South African National Team after five years spell, leaving very big shoes to fill. The departure follows speculation that had been initially dismissed by SAFA. Broos' biggest achievement was taking South Africa to the FIFA World Cup in USA where his squad got eliminated in the first round of the  knockout stages. He goes down as one of best coaches to ever lead Bafana in the history of South African football.

SOWETO - Orlando Pirates Football Club has confirmed the signing of midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi from Stellenbosch FC, ahead of the new Betway Premiership campaign. The 23-year-old has signed a three-year contract and will link up with the rest of the squad this morning. “I am pleased to be here and look forward to meeting the rest of the team,” said Mokobodi. “It’s a big opportunity to play for such a club and I am ready to get going. CAPE TOWN - Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has approved departmental financial assistance of R3 million to enable both the South African Men’s and Women’s National Hockey Teams to participate fully funded at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup. JOHANNESBURG - The South African Football Association (SAFA) says it has learnt with concern of reports and rumours being circulated by respected media houses alleging that Bafana Bafana Head Coach Hugo Broos has been offered or issued with a one-year contract extension. SAFA  categorically states that these reports are false, unfounded and misleading. To set the record straight, SAFA has not issued any contract to any coach in respect of the Bafana Bafana head coach position. Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement. The Association’s governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been concluded. Therefore no decision has been taken, and no contract has been issued or approved by the National Executive Committee.

NATURENA - Kaizer Chiefs have secured the services of Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from Tanzanian giants, Azam FC for an undisclosed fee, following successful negotiations between the two Clubs. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder, who was captain at Azam, becomes the first player from Tanzania to join Amakhosi. His arrival adds to the impressive list of players from over 20 different African countries who have worn the famous Gold & Black jersey. Mtasingwa brings valuable experience, having spent six seasons in Scandinavia, playing in the Icelandic, Norwegian and Finnish leagues. The race attracted thousands of cyclists and spectators to Durban, reinforcing the city's status as a leading sports tourism destination, while generating significant economic benefits. NEW JERSEY - Spain have become world champions for the second time in their history, Luis de la Fuente’s men beating Argentina 1-0 in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ final in New York New Jersey. Although Spain dominated the game from start to finish, they had to wait until the 106th minute to finally find a way past Emiliano Martinez. The Argentina goalkeeper made a series of saves to thwart La Roja but had no chance when Nico Williams nodded down a Pedro Porro cross at the far post and Ferran Torres buried a first-time shot into the roof of the net. Defending champions Argentina had lost Enzo Fernandez to a second yellow card at the end of normal time yet they battled to the end. However, Spain, as when winning the 2010 final, found the answer in extra time.

OKLAHOMA CITY - South African international fighter Dricus "Stillknocks" Du Plessis secured a unanimous decision victory over Kamaru Usman at UFC Fight Night in Oklahoma City (USA) on Saturday, 19 July 2026. Usman of Nigeria descent, was dominated during the entire fighter, and almost knocked down several times during the 5-round bout. Du Plessis, who was no.2 for the Middle Weight title after losing it to Khamzat Chimaev last year, now moves up to be the no.1 contender. The title currently rests on the shoulders of Sean Strickland after beating Khamzat earlier. DURBAN - Durban City FC is pleased to announce the signing of Tashreeq Morris ahead of the Club’s 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign. The 32-year-old centre-forward joins the Citizens with more than a decade of top-flight experience in South African football, having represented Ajax Cape Town, Cape Town City FC, Sekhukhune United, SuperSport United and, most recently, Kaizer Chiefs during his professional career. Morris has made more than 200 senior appearances across all competitions, bringing valuable top-flight experience to Durban City. Speaking after completing his move to the Citizens, Morris expressed his excitement at beginning the next chapter of his career. “I am delighted to be joining Durban City FC and to become part of this exciting project.
