VERULAM  -  A Jogger was attacked by a Pitbull while exercising in Brindhaven, Verulam on Thursday, 23 July. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for medical assistance. On arrival, Reaction Officers established that a 38-year-old man had sustained injuries after being attacked by a Pitbull. The man and his wife were on their usual afternoon run along Glenhaven Drive when the gate to a residence was allegedly left open. As the couple passed the property, two (2) dogs, a Rottweiler and a Pitbull, ran out of the yard. The Pitbull charged at the Jogger and inflicted bite wounds to his right leg before the dogs were restrained. He informed Officers that a vehicle was parked outside the property and the gate had been left open. He added that he and his wife use the same route every alternate day and were unaware that dogs were kept at the residence. The male was treated on scene by Paramedics before being expedited to hospital by ambulance.

DURBAN - The Durban Metropolitan Police Service officers have charged an illegal trader found selling cow head meat without the required legal authorisation during a by-law enforcement operation in Durban CBD. The enforcement action forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with municipal by-laws, protect public health, and safeguard consumers from food sold outside approved standards. The Durban Metropolitan Police Service remains committed to maintaining a safe, clean and law-abiding trading environment across the City.

JOHANNESBURG - The Postbank has issued an appeal to social grant beneficiaries who have not yet replaced their SASSA Gold Cards with Postbank Black Cards, warning that the deadline for the migration is fast approaching. Beneficiaries have until 31 August 2026 to complete the switch, with the Postbank cautioning that SASSA Gold Cards are being phased out and will no longer function once the migration process is concluded. The Postbank said beneficiaries who fail to replace their cards by the deadline could face disruptions in accessing their social grant payments. DURBAN - A foreign national Truck Driver was fatally injured in a collision on the N2 off-ramp leading to Mount Edgecombe on Friday, 24 July. Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched after receiving a call reporting that a truck had collided with the concrete barrier. On arrival, Reaction Officers found members of the public attempting to free the Driver, who had been ejected from the truck upon impact and became trapped beneath the vehicle. The truck was leaking diesel. Witnesses informed Officers that they had been travelling behind the truck when it began swerving across the roadway before colliding with the concrete barrier. A search of the truck located a driver’s permit confirming that the Driver was a Malawian national. The male sustained visible facial injuries and was unresponsive. He was declared deceased by Paramedics from a private ambulance service.

CAPE TOWN - Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has approved departmental financial assistance of R3 million to enable both the South African Men’s and Women’s National Hockey Teams to participate fully funded at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup. PRETORIA - The South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has kept the repo rate unchanged at 7%. This was announced by Reserve Bank Governor, Lesetja Kganyago on Thursday. The prime lending rate will also stay steady at 10.50%. “Four members preferred a hold, while two favoured an increase of 25 basis points. “The committee agreed that the outlook is uncertain, and with the rate increase at our previous meeting, the policy stance is appropriate for now, with rates somewhat restrictive,” Kganyago said. Turning to growth, the Governor said that while first quarter growth stood “stronger than expected”, the MPC expects sluggish growth through the second and third quarter. “Consumer confidence has fallen sharply, and business confidence has also weakened. WESTERN CAPE - President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted the Western Cape High Court’s granting today of the President’s urgent application to temporarily interdict and pause Section 89 impeachment proceedings by Parliament. The President asked the court that impeachment proceedings be paused until the court finalises a separate application by the President for a review of an independent panel’s report on an incident at the President’s Phala Phala game farm. According to the Office, President Ramaphosa respects the ruling handed down today, Friday, 24 July 2026.  The President reaffirms his respect of judicial independence and separation of powers enshrined in our Constitution. CENTURION - Build One South Africa (BOSA) has terminated the membership of Ayanda Allie. Ayanda was a sole representative in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Her dismissal follows the conclusion of an internal disciplinary process that began in July 2025. According to MDM News, the party’s board made the decision final after Allie declined to appeal, and BOSA publicly thanked her for her service while leaving the specific allegations undisclosed; the move leaves the party with no seats in the Gauteng Legislature. CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomed the arrival of ‘Evie’, the City’s first fully electric MyCiTi bus. This first bus has now passed rigorous performance testing on several routes. The City has confirmed an order for an initial 38 battery-electric buses as part of broader plans for a public transport system that is cleaner, smarter and less susceptible to diesel price fluctuations. The electric bus fleet will be deployed along the major new Cape Flats route expansion, set to benefit over 1,4 million residents across 30 neighbourhoods, from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, to Wynberg and Claremont. This is South Africa’s biggest metro-led public transport project, with an overall infrastructure investment of R7,1bn committed to date.

  DURBAN - Residents and businesses supplied with water from the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works have been advised  by eThekwini Municipality of a planned 24-hour water supply on Friday, 24 July at 7am until Saturday, 25 July at 7 am.    The interruption is due to essential maintenance work being by uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW) at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works.   The planned shutdown forms part of a project to rehabilitate the elevated sections of Nagle Aqueducts 1 and 2.    Nagle Aqueducts 1 and 2 are two large-diameter bulk water pipelines that form part of the raw water conveyance system supplying the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, where water is treated and distributed throughout the city.   A complete shutdown is therefore necessary to install an isolation valve on Aqueduct 2. KROONSTAD  -  The Free State Department of Social Development led a march for older persons in Kroonstad to raise awareness about elder abuse and promote the rights, safety, and dignity of older persons in line with the Older Persons Act, 2006. The march, held on 22 July, provided community member; officials, and stakeholders with a platform to take a stand against the neglect and exploitation of older persons.  During the march, the older persons engaged in public education, advocacy, and community mobilisation to strengthen their protection while promoting healthy ageing and social inclusion. JOHANNESBURG - The South African Football Association (SAFA) says it has learnt with concern of reports and rumours being circulated by respected media houses alleging that Bafana Bafana Head Coach Hugo Broos has been offered or issued with a one-year contract extension. SAFA  categorically states that these reports are false, unfounded and misleading. To set the record straight, SAFA has not issued any contract to any coach in respect of the Bafana Bafana head coach position. Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement. The Association’s governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been concluded. Therefore no decision has been taken, and no contract has been issued or approved by the National Executive Committee.

JOHANNESBURG - The alleged United Kingdom fugitive, Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma (46), appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on two separate matters. He appeared in extradition proceedings following a request by the United Kingdom authorities and in a separate case involving charges of the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Both matters were postponed to 27 August 2026. The extradition proceedings were postponed, allowing for the finalisation of the extradition documentation, while the firearm and ammunition matter was postponed for further police investigations. Although Tshuma initially entered South Africa legally through OR Tambo International Airport on 05 July 2026, his immigration status has subsequently changed due to his status as a fugitive. LANGA - More than 200 bags of waste have been removed, over 20 stormwater drains cleared and hundreds of residents reached through a City-funded community project that is helping keep Langa cleaner, reduce localised flooding and encourage water-wise living. The Abahlobo Ekuhlaleni Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) is one of 22 organisations that received grant funding from the City of Cape Town's Water and Sanitation Directorate during the 2025/26 financial year, to support community-led water conservation initiatives. Through its Langa Drain Restoration and Water-Saving Community Campaign, the organisation addressed litter-clogged stormwater drains, stagnant water and poor waste management practices that contribute to localised flooding, pollution and unhealthy living conditions in the Lower Salt River sub-catchment. Implemented between February and June 2026, the project combined environmental restoration with community education to promote responsible water use.

NATURENA - Kaizer Chiefs have secured the services of Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from Tanzanian giants, Azam FC for an undisclosed fee, following successful negotiations between the two Clubs. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder, who was captain at Azam, becomes the first player from Tanzania to join Amakhosi. His arrival adds to the impressive list of players from over 20 different African countries who have worn the famous Gold & Black jersey. Mtasingwa brings valuable experience, having spent six seasons in Scandinavia, playing in the Icelandic, Norwegian and Finnish leagues. DURBAN - A foreign national sustained serious injuries following a high impact single vehicle collision on Phoenix Highway near the Gandhi Park area on Monday evening. According to multiple eyewitnesses, the vehicle was allegedly travelling at an excessive speed from the J.G. Champion area towards the Phoenix Industrial Park when the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle left the roadway before crashing violently into a light pole, leaving the driver severely entrapped inside the wreckage. KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, medics found the driver trapped inside the extensively damaged vehicle and immediately commenced advanced life support treatment while awaiting the Fire Department to conduct the technical extrication. JOHANNESBURG - Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Witness K, who previously testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, have been added as accused in the alleged R15 million precious stones robbery case. The pair appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court today, where they were each granted unopposed bail of R5 000. Mkhwanazi and Witness K will join their co-accused, Adrian Norman Mackenzie and Keisha Leigh Stols, when the matter returns to court. The case has been postponed to 25 August 2026 for further investigation. The State alleges that the accused participated in the robbery of precious stones valued at approximately R15 million in Johannesburg in February 2023. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) remains committed to ensuring that all prosecutions are conducted fairly, impartially, and in accordance with the law.

SOUTH COAST - The KwaZulu-Natal Traffic Inspectorate in Park Rynie has rescued 35 school children who were loaded into a minibus taxi with heavily black tinted windows. The taxi has been impounded, and the driver, who was not even carrying his driver’s license, has been fined more than R2000. According to the Department of Transport, the driver will be penalized for his actions. "Under the new AARTO point demerit system, a motorist who fails to carry a driver’s license and drives a vehicle with non-compliant tint incurs 2 demerit points. "RTI and Operation Shanela teams will be clamping down on motorists who are overloading children and try to evade law enforcement by using heavily black tinted windows," the department said.

SKUKUZA - A fire occurred at a storage warehouse in Skukuza, Kruger National Park, during the late hours of Saturday, 18 July 2026. The warehouse in question is situated a considerable distance from all tourism accommodation and administrative offices, according to Park authorities. As such, there was no immediate risk to guests or core operational facilities, and no injuries have been reported. At this stage, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. A full investigation is underway, with relevant emergency and technical teams on site to secure the area and assess the extent of the damage. The warehouse housed critical infrastructure components, including spare generators, geysers, substantial quantities of electrical cabling, and other essential maintenance equipment. The loss of these assets may have a short-term effect on certain maintenance operations within the park. BOKSBURG - The Gauteng National Taxi Association is threatening a provincial industry strike should its concerns remain ignored. The Association says if a meeting with Roads and Transport MEC, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela isn't fruitful and its memorandum of demands aren't met, consequently this force them to disrupt services for seven days. PRETORIA - Department of Health has announced that people travelling to South Africa from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will have to complete a health questionnaire before travelling, due to the Ebola virus outbreak. More than 2 000 confirmed cases and 800 deaths resulting from the virus have been reported since the outbreak in May.  “Due to the current EVD [Ebola Virus Disease] outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, everyone travelling to South Africa from the DRC and Uganda is required to complete a Travel Health Questionnaire (THQ). “The THQ can be completed up to 24 hours before travel to South Africa to facilitate smooth processing upon arrival,” the department said on social media. KINSHASA - The African Development Bank Group has approved grants worth USD 13 million to enhance national emergency responses to the Ebola virus disease (EVD-B) outbreak and strengthen efforts to arrest its spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and Uganda.   On 15 May 2026, DRC announced a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease centred in Ituri province, in the east of the country, and also affecting Bunia, Rwampara and Mongwalu.   The funding package comprises a grant of USD 10 million drawing on reallocated resources from the Bank Group’s DRC portfolio, and which will be channelled through the World Health Organisation (WHO). DURBAN - The Durban Metropolitan Police Service, working in partnership with the South African Police Service, continued its commitment to improving road safety through coordinated drunk driving enforcement operations conducted on Friday night, 17 July 2026. Two roadblocks were held at Battery Beach with Durban Central SAPS and on the M35 Umbumbulu Road (Nsimbini) with Folweni SAPS. The operations resulted in a total of 33 motorists being arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. KRUGERSDORP - Mogale City Local Municipality Mayor Lucky Sele provided an update on the water outage affecting parts of Krugersdorp and beyond. The outage is due to a planned Rand Water maintenance project which was scheduled for 17 to 19 July. Sadly, this has left many taps dry. However, Mayor Sele updated that the Rand Water maintenance was successfully completed yesterday. However, the recovery and replenishment of reservoirs is a gradual process, as reservoir levels were significantly affected by the maintenance work. "Residents may continue to experience low water pressure or intermittent water supply while the system recovers. We appreciate your patience and understanding as reservoir levels are restored and the network returns to normal operations," he cautioned. Although Spain dominated the game from start to finish, they had to wait until the 106th minute to finally find a way past Emiliano Martinez. Do not drive when tired or drowsy. • Always wear your seatbelt and ensure that all passengers are buckled up. * Do not drink and drive. * Never leave valuables or bags visible inside your vehicle when stepping away, even for a short period. Plan your journey, remain vigilant and obey the rules of the road. Let us all work together to ensure that everyone reaches their destination safely and all children can commence school this coming week. 

ROODEPOORT - On Mandela Day, BOSA Deputy leader, MP and Joburg Mayoral candidate Nobuntu Hlazo Webster stood with the residents of Leratong to tackle the service delivery failures, from water and electricity to basic maintenance that have plagued this forgotten community for years. Hlazo called it an honor to work alongside local residents and BOSA activists to rebuild Leratong.  "Corruption and poor governance may have caused these challenges, but community solidarity is the catalyst for the solution," she said after restoring the dignity of local citizens.

PRETORIA - In commemoration of Mandela Day, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the community members of Kekana Gardens at Maranatha Reformed Church of Christ during the launch of the National Water Access Acceleration Programme in Hammanskraal, Gauteng. The initiative is aimed at expanding access to safe and reliable water services for unserved and underserved communities across the country. A key milestone of the programme is the launch of 67 borehole symbolising the 67 years the founding Father of our democratic government and global icon, former President Nelson Mandela dedicated to serving humanity. The initiative forms part of a broader programme of Mandela Month service delivery activities geared towards the vulnerable in society. 

OKLAHOMA CITY - South African international fighter Dricus "Stillknocks" Du Plessis secured a unanimous decision victory over Kamaru Usman at UFC Fight Night in Oklahoma City (USA) on Saturday, 19 July 2026. Usman of Nigeria descent, was dominated during the entire fighter, and almost knocked down several times during the 5-round bout. Du Plessis, who was no.2 for the Middle Weight title after losing it to Khamzat Chimaev last year, now moves up to be the no.1 contender. The title currently rests on the shoulders of Sean Strickland after beating Khamzat earlier. As the no.1 contender, Stillknocks may face Strickland for the third time, hopefully secure his third victory against him later this year. Image source: UFC
