PRETORIA - Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns talent, Jayden Adams passes away at 25-years-old The midfielder was part of a squad that represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His passing was confirmed by the South African Football Association, but the cause of death has not yet been made public.  Sundowns is yet to release a statement on the matter.

JOHANNESBURG - Ex-SA Under-18 prop Luqobo Makwedini collapsed and died following a training session with French club AS Béziers Hérault on Friday. The 20-year-old front ranker, affectionately known as Bibo, fell ill at the end of the morning session at the Stade de la Gayonne and was rushed to hospital, where he died a few hours later. French reports said he was believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest, though the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed. Makwedini, a product of Wynberg Boys' High in Cape Town, had joined the Béziers academy ahead of the 2025/26 season and was regarded by the club as one of its brightest young prospects.

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town’s first electric bus arrived from Johannesburg, where the bodies of the MyCiTi electric bus fleet are being manufactured. This prototype e-bus will be piloted on a variety of routes in coming weeks to determine its performance on steep inclines and downhill, in the city environment with many stop-and-goes, in heavy traffic during peak periods, and when travelling longer distances. All-in-all, the City will take delivery of 38 low-floor battery-electric buses as part of the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service to the metro-south east. The buses are expected to arrive during the current calendar year with the fleet earmarked for operational roll-out in 2027. These are 12-metre Volvo BZRLE battery-electric buses and the first MyCiTi buses where the bodies have been designed in South Africa and locally manufactured in Gauteng. JOHANNESURG - Raya commuters were left in limbo after the public transport service was abruptly disrupted today. The bus service told commuters that Rea Vaya bus service is temporarily unavailable today due to unforeseen circumstances, adding that the City is in contact with the Rea Vaya bus operating companies to establish the cause of lack of services.  The resumption of the service is yet to be communicated. Commuters are advised to use alternative transport.

DURBAN - The eThekwini Municipality has informed residents that the Hazelmere Water Treatment Works is currently experiencing low raw water storage levels, resulting in reduced water production capacity. As a result, water supply to several reservoirs is being carefully managed, and residents and businesses in the affected areas may experience reduced water pressure or intermittent water supply. To maximise the available water supply, pumping to the affected reservoirs is being alternated to allow reservoir storage levels to recover. The City's Water Operations teams are continuously monitoring reservoir levels and adjusting the water distribution network to minimise the impact on consumers. Consumers in the affected areas are urged to use water sparingly and only for essential purposes until normal water supply has been restored. WITBANK - The Police in Witbank, Mpumalanga, have opened two inquest dockets for investigation after a 43-year-old man and his 4-year-old nephew died allegedly after consuming biscuits taken from a local spaza shop on Wednesday, 08 July 2026.  It is reported that the owner of the tuckshop, who is a foreign national, had arranged with the landlord to store his stock in the main house. This was after he heard that there was looting of tuckshops belonging to foreign nationals in the area. The landlord allegedly consumed some of the biscuits and shared them with his nephew.  Shortly afterwards, both of them started feeling dizzy and vomiting. They were taken to a local medical facility where they were certified dead on arrival. The source of the biscuits and the cause of death will be determined through post-mortem examinations.  Police urge members of the community not to consume foodstuffs obtained during looting, as their safety cannot be guaranteed.

 JOHANNESBURG -  City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Mayor Dada Morero has assured city residents that the municipality is working with National Treasury to resolve its challenges. This after the municipality, along with 68 others, had their July 2026 equitable share transfers withheld by National Treasury in a move to instil strict fiscal discipline and root out financial misconduct. “Not only have we been working through the [Treasury] Intergovernmental Relations structure, but we have been working through the Presidential Finance Working Group led by the President and the Executive Mayor. “A few weeks ago, we met with the Minister of Finance and mapped out a process for managing issues of concern,” Morero said at a media briefing on Wednesday. PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the final report deadline of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System. The Commission will submit its report on Monday, 16 November 2026, instead of 31 August, as anticipated originally. The extension granted by the President sets an evidence deadline of Friday, 2 October 2026, and a reporting deadline of Monday, 16 November, to enable the Commission to close off topics it has opened up in the course of hearings to date. The extension allows the Commission to hear evidence on all of the matters listed in its terms of reference. Without an extension, the Commission will have to leave large parts of its work unfinished. President Ramaphosa once again expresses his deepest appreciation for the work conducted by Commission as well as for the manner in which law enforcement agencies are following up testimony emerging from Commission hearings.

KWAZULU-NATAL - Eskom has reached an important milestone in its nationwide Load Reduction Eradication Programme, with five of South Africa’s nine provinces now free from load reduction. To date, 1 104 225 customers have been removed from load reduction schedules, representing 56.17% performance towards the programme’s load reduction eradication target. Originally implemented to address overloaded local networks and protect electricity infrastructure, the programme has removed 545 feeders from load reduction nationally, with the remaining load reduction areas concentrated largely in Gauteng followed by KwaZulu-Natal. This milestone follows the successful elimination of load reduction in Mpumalanga, joining the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State and North West as provinces that are now free from load reduction.
