PRETORIA - The South African Reserve Bank has officially launched two new commemorative circulation coins, celebrating the legacies of Charlotte Maxeke as well as the women of the 1956 Women’s March. The R2 coin featuring Charlotte Maxeke’s profile celebrates her becoming the first black South African woman to obtain a university degree 125 years ago. The design was inspired by the beads she wore in her early years. Addressing the launch, Governor Lesetja Kganyago reflected: “For a black woman at that time, access to higher education was not simply limited; it was almost unimaginable. The barriers before her were legal, social, economic and cultural. That is why her graduation in 1901 … was so extraordinary. PRETORIA - Department of Health has announced that people travelling to South Africa from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will have to complete a health questionnaire before travelling, due to the Ebola virus outbreak. More than 2 000 confirmed cases and 800 deaths resulting from the virus have been reported since the outbreak in May.  “Due to the current EVD [Ebola Virus Disease] outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, everyone travelling to South Africa from the DRC and Uganda is required to complete a Travel Health Questionnaire (THQ). “The THQ can be completed up to 24 hours before travel to South Africa to facilitate smooth processing upon arrival,” the department said on social media. PRETORIA - Some 400 00 informal and micro businesses have been captured on the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) Connect System. This is according to Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration Chairperson and Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, who briefed the media on Sunday. “Registration of Informal and micro businesses is continuing. To date, more than 400 00 businesses have been captured on the DSBD Connect System, and the implementation of the plan will increase the number of registered businesses. “DSBD, SALGA [South African Local Government Association] and COGTA [the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs] are finalising the Project Implementation Plan,” Kubayi said. The system is a digital platform aimed at assisting the department to regulate and support spaza shops while helping small businesses to, among others, access funding and form OEM [Original Equipment Manufacturer] partnerships.

PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his deep condolences at the passing of two outstanding young sportsmen, Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams and former South African Rugby Under-18 prop Luqobo Makwedini. President Ramaphosa offers his deep condolences to the families of Jayden Adams and Luqobo Makwedini who have passed away at the age of 25 and 20 respectively. The President’s thoughts are with Jayden’s teammates in Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as Luqobo Makwedini’s former SA Under-18 teammates and his club colleagues in France.  JOHANNESBURG -  City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Mayor Dada Morero has assured city residents that the municipality is working with National Treasury to resolve its challenges. This after the municipality, along with 68 others, had their July 2026 equitable share transfers withheld by National Treasury in a move to instil strict fiscal discipline and root out financial misconduct. “Not only have we been working through the [Treasury] Intergovernmental Relations structure, but we have been working through the Presidential Finance Working Group led by the President and the Executive Mayor. “A few weeks ago, we met with the Minister of Finance and mapped out a process for managing issues of concern,” Morero said at a media briefing on Wednesday. PRETORIA - President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the final report deadline of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System. The Commission will submit its report on Monday, 16 November 2026, instead of 31 August, as anticipated originally. The extension granted by the President sets an evidence deadline of Friday, 2 October 2026, and a reporting deadline of Monday, 16 November, to enable the Commission to close off topics it has opened up in the course of hearings to date. The extension allows the Commission to hear evidence on all of the matters listed in its terms of reference. Without an extension, the Commission will have to leave large parts of its work unfinished. President Ramaphosa once again expresses his deepest appreciation for the work conducted by Commission as well as for the manner in which law enforcement agencies are following up testimony emerging from Commission hearings.
