DURBAN - As the world marks World Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July, the eThekwini Municipality together with lifesaving organisations hosted a water safety programme at the Rachel Finlayson Swimming Pool.  A key highlight was a series of rescue demonstration by lifeguards who showcased mass rescue techniques, emergency response procedures and life saving first aid interventions. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), drowning takes more than 300 000 lives a year - 30 every hour - and almost a quarter of them are children under five. Globally, it is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years. More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, domestic water storage vessels and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.

KROONSTAD  -  The Free State Department of Social Development led a march for older persons in Kroonstad to raise awareness about elder abuse and promote the rights, safety, and dignity of older persons in line with the Older Persons Act, 2006. The march, held on 22 July, provided community member; officials, and stakeholders with a platform to take a stand against the neglect and exploitation of older persons.  During the march, the older persons engaged in public education, advocacy, and community mobilisation to strengthen their protection while promoting healthy ageing and social inclusion. They are also showcased the skills they have acquired through their respective Protective Workshops and Luncheon Clubs. This initiative reaffirms the Department's commitment to building age-friendly communities and ensuring that older persons are treated with the care, respect, and dignity they deserve.

DURBAN - The festive season has become more exciting in Durban as the streets were lit up by the Metro to flourish. This week, eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, officially illuminated the City’s Christmas lights.  According to the Metro, these lights are a captivating displays along Dr. Pixley ka Seme Street, a key entrance to the City, heralding a season brimming with events and celebrations.

DURBAN - EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, mingled and interacted with beachgoers this week as he monitors the festive season management plans he recently announced. Xaba walked from Ushaka Marine beach to North Beach, witnessing throngs of people who enjoyed enjoying themselves.  According  to the Metro, all 23 beaches in Durban are open for swimming, with clean water and more than 40 swimming pools. Mayor Xaba also engaged with law enforcement agencies to get the latest on the security plans.

GAUTENG - The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is urging members of the public to carefully consider launching boats or other craft onto Hartbeespoort Dam at this time, due to extensive water hyacinth coverage that presents serious and growing safety hazards. The floating mass of hyacinth currently covers large areas of the dam. It is expected to increase rapidly in the coming weeks. Hyacinth growth at Hartbeespoort typically accelerates during the summer season, and changes in wind direction are causing these thick mats to move swiftly and unpredictably across the water. This creates extremely hazardous conditions for watercraft. “We are asking the public to carefully consider whether it is safe to go out on the water,” said Arthur Crewe, NSRI Hartbeespoort Station Commander. “If your craft becomes trapped in the hyacinth, the rescue options are limited. CAPETOWN - "Welcome to Cape Town, Gauta, Maxwell and Karabo!! You made it!!" said the City of Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis after the boys embarked on gruelling cycling journey from Limpopo to the Western Cape capital. "These 3 guys have cycled from Limpopo to Cape Town. 14 days on the road, over 1700km! They’ve raised money for their community to establish a cycling club to introduce more young people to the joys of cycling. On the journey, they’ve also captured the hearts of the nation," said Hill-Lewis  Although this journey was beyond imaginable, DJ Karri who caught up with the boys along the Free State Province brought ease to the journey as he used his influence on social media to push this great cause. GAUTENG - National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, has called on students participating in the 2nd SAPSET Student Leadership Camp to remain focused on their studies and help close South Africa’s skills gap. The four-day camp, hosted at Sediba Kwele Adventure Camp, brought together 43 students from Grades 10 to 12 under the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) programme. The public is also advised to please keep drowning prevention measures top of mind at all times.
