KZN SNOW ALERT: Kokstad and Port Shepstone NO GO AREAS, Road Grader deployed to clear snow

KOKSTAD - The N2 around Kokstad and Port Shepstone has been closed due to snowfall. 

In  a statement, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma has urged motorists and snow chasers to avoid the area at all costs Prevention is Better than Cure.

"I wish to advise motorists and the people of KwaZulu-Natal that our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate has closed the N2 due to snowfall around Kokstad and Port Shepstone.

"To save lives, we have decided to close completely the road between Kokstad and Pietemaritzburg as well as R603 - Tacoma to Reit," he said.

"Our message to motorists and Snow Chasers is that prevention is better than cure.

We, therefore, urge motorists and general members of the public to avoid that area at all costs by delaying their trips leading to Kokstad as trucks are already stuck and creating huge congestion," he added.

The RTI team is working with traffic police from Kokstad and Ray Nkonyeni Local municipalities to redirect motorists and to clear the snow.

Critically, the department wishes to report the following snowfall response measures:

1. Traffic officers: Road Safety and Traffic Inspectorate - They are already involved in the coordination of possible road closures and observation of major routes in consultation with N3 Toll Concession. The focus is on N2, Kokstad and Port Shepstone, N3 between Harrismith, Tugela Toll, R617 between Kokstad and Underberg, Ingeli and N3 Mooi River, and others.
 
2. Drivers of Motor Graders: Transport Infrastructure Unit- Drivers of Motor Graders are currently being sharpened to respond with speed and a sense of urgency to remove any snow before it accumulates to more than 30cm in depth on the road. More than 10 Graders will be stationed on identified routes to ensure that our response is faster.

DURBAN -  The eThekwini Municipality's Recreation and Parks Directorate, working together with the City's Emergency Services, are attending to multiple incidents across the city following strong winds that swept through eThekwini this afternoon and early evening, uprooting trees and disrupting traffic in several communities. BOKSBURG - The Gauteng National Taxi Association is threatening a provincial industry strike should its concerns remain ignored.
