GAUTENG POLICE SEIZE COUNTERFEIT ILLICIT GOODS WORTH MORE THAN R27.5 MILLION IN FOUR-DAY OPERATION

GAUTENG - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, through the Provincial Counterfeit Unit, continues to intensify efforts to combat the manufacturing, distribution and sale of counterfeit, contraband and illicit goods across the province.

Between 27 and 30 July 2026, the Provincial Counterfeit Unit, working together with brand protection representatives and other law enforcement partners, executed a series of search and seizure operations across the Tshwane, West Rand, Sedibeng and Johannesburg Districts. The operations resulted in the seizure of counterfeit and illicit goods with an estimated value of R27 504 578.00.

On Monday, 27 July 2026, members executed a search and seizure warrant at business premises in Pretoria Central, Tshwane District. During the operation, police confiscated 109 counterfeit HP toner cartridges with an estimated value of R327 000.00.

The operation continued on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, in Kagiso, West Rand District, where four shops were inspected. Police seized 1 125 counterfeit and illicit items, including counterfeit consumables, cellphone accessories and shoes, as well as illicit honey, poison and pharmaceutical products. The estimated value of the seized goods is R175 910.00.

On Thursday, 30 July 2026, another operation was conducted in Evaton, Sedibeng District, where four shops were visited.

Members confiscated 129 counterfeit consumables, socks and shoes valued at approximately R30 668.00.

On the same day, a major operation was conducted in the Johannesburg and Sedibeng Districts, targeting storage facilities in Randburg and Heidelberg. The operation was executed by the Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Unit, supported by members from the Border Police Unit based at City Deep and brand protection representatives.

During the operation, police searched three storage units, resulting in the seizure of:

10 350 pairs of counterfeit shoes valued at R15 525 000.00 in Randburg; and 44 350 counterfeit clothing items and shoes valued at R11 445 000.00 in Heidelberg.

The total seizure from the Johannesburg operation amounted to 54 700 counterfeit items with an estimated value of R26 970 000.00.

The four-day operation resulted in the seizure of 56 063 counterfeit and illicit items with a combined estimated value of R27 504 578.00.

Gauteng SAPS will continue to work closely with government departments, brand owners and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that those involved in the #IllicitTrade of #CounterfeitGoods are brought to justice.

BEDFORDVIEW - A woman was killed on Friday morning after a large rock was allegedly thrown from the Concord Road Bridge onto the R24 freeway near Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg. The rock smashed through the windscreen of her vehicle on the eastbound carriageway, shortly before the Gillooly’s Interchange, at approximately 07:38. The impact caused fatal head injuries. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into the roadside barriers. She was declared dead at the scene. Ekurhuleni Metro Police confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened at Bedfordview SAPS. Authorities are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

HUSBAND TO APPEAR IN COURT FOR RAPE OF HIS WIFE

FREE STATE - A 50-year-old suspect, who is the husband of the victim, will appear in Zastron magistrate court soon on a charge of rape. This is after the incident that happened at their home in Refeng-kgotso in Zastron.   The 54-year-old victim alleges that on Friday, 14 August 2026, at 02:00, she was at home busy with her clients as she is a Sangoma. Her husband came to her and demanded to be intimate with her. The victim refused as she was busy working. The suspect grabbed her and forcefully took her to the room. He undressed both of them and violated her without consent. After he finished, he got into bed and went to sleep. During the morning of Friday, 18 August 2026, at 07:00, the victim decided to report the incident. A case of rape was opened and is being investigated by the Smitfield Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit.

Parliament approves extension of driving license card validity

CAPE TOWN - Parliament has approved the extension of driving license card validity in South Africa, which will increase the time between renewals from 5 to 10 years. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni confirmed the approval in a post-Cabinet briefing on 30 July. Cabinet approved the extension of the validity period for license codes A, A1, B and EB, Ntshavheni said. However, this will only apply to light motor vehicles. Heavy, commercial and transport vehicles will adhere to the current renewal cycles of between two and five years, and professional licenses will remain on the two-year cycle.
