Families of Deceased N1 Bus Accident Victims Identify Their Loved Ones at Free State Mortuary

FREE STATE  - Wailing and heart-piercing cries of sorrow and helplessness echoed through the lonely corridors of the cold Free State Mortuary, a haunting reflection of the absence of life, as inconsolable families and relatives, irrespective of age and gender, wept uncontrollably after identifying the bodies of their loved ones who tragically died in a bus accident that claimed the lives of eleven (11) Zimbabwean nationals on the N1 road on Thursday, 30 July 2026.

Inconsolable families murmured and struggled for breath, not only because lives had been lost, but also because of the unbearable reality of witnessing the extent of the injuries suffered by those they loved dearly.

The weight of the tragedy was profoundly evidenced by the cries of a father who sobbed uncontrollably after seeing the lifeless bodies of his wife and three children. This is an ordeal no human being should ever have to endure.

A preliminary report indicates that the bus, carrying 79 passengers, all Zimbabwean nationals, was travelling from Cape Town to Harare, Zimbabwe, when it overturned on the N1 road between Trompsburg and Edenburg in the Free State. Eleven people lost their lives, among them 4 females, 2 males, five children aged between six and ten years, as well as one 15 year-old. Ten of the 11 victims were declared dead at the scene, while a 47 year-old woman unfortunately succumbed to her injuries later in hospital. Four of the deceased, 2 women and two children, were injured beyond recognition.

A joint response by the Free State Emergency Medical Services (EMS), public and private healthcare stakeholders, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and traffic control units saw emergency personnel swiftly attend to the accident scene. Sixty-five (65) patients were transported to various health facilities according to the severity of their injuries and the medical attention required.

Patients were transported to Albert Nzula District Hospital, Pelonomi Hospital and Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Addressing the Consul-General of Zimbabwe to South Africa, Mr Eria Phiri, and families of the deceased, Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae said:

“We meet under unfortunate circumstances,” she said. “A time of tragic loss and sorrow. We bow our heads and share in your grief. We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all those who have lost their loved ones.

“South Africa and Zimbabwe are sister countries with a rich history and deep cultural and intergovernmental ties. I also want to appreciate the stellar collaborative work undertaken by the various state agencies and stakeholders in responding to this tragedy.”

Consul-General Phiri, expressing his appreciation to the Premier and the South African Government, said:

“On behalf of the Zimbabwean Government, I want to express our deepest gratitude to the South African Government for the support afforded to our citizens, in particular the exceptional work done under humanly difficult conditions.

“We note the diligence with which the authorities handled this incident and the care afforded to the survivors of this tragic accident, which claimed the lives of 11 of our citizens and injured many others.”

Families will be provided with psychosocial support by the Department of Social Development. The survivors and the remains of those who lost their lives will be transported to Zimbabwe by the Zimbabwean Government, where a memorial service will be held in remembrance of those who tragically lost their lives.
