Marshall Security pins down social media dating scammers, syndicate convicted and sentenced

DURBAN NORTH - A major investigation led by Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team and Investigations Division, working in close partnership with the SAPS Ethekwini district task team, has resulted in the successful conviction of four accused linked to a series of violent robberies in which victims were lured through a social media dating platform.

The convictions, handed down in the Durban Regional Court, mark the successful conclusion of an investigation that began in 2023 after Marshall Security members identified a disturbing trend involving suspects using fake social media profiles to target unsuspecting victims.

Victims were allegedly lured to hotel rooms and bed and breakfast establishments in the Durban North, Umhlanga, and Ballito areas, where they were assaulted, restrained, robbed of their belongings, and forced to hand over access to their bank accounts.

The investigation gained momentum after members of the Marshall Security Special Operations Team received information regarding the suspects and spotted them fleeing from a hotel in the Umhlanga area shortly after committing a robbery.

Without hesitation, members initiated a pursuit with the assistance of the Durban North SAPS Detectives. Following a brief vehicle pursuit along the N2 freeway, all four suspects were successfully apprehended and detained by Durban North SAPS.

The investigation linked the suspects to multiple cases.

Yesterday, the four were found guilty on the following counts:

Accused 1 was found guilty on six counts and sentenced to 57 years’ imprisonment.

Accused 2 was found guilty on two counts and sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment.

Accused 3 was found guilty on six counts and sentenced to 57 years’ imprisonment.

Accused 4 was found guilty on two counts and sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment.
